For Sale - Vauxhall A type A09.73
A new custodian is sought for A09.73, by the family of its first owner. Registered in Buckinghamshire in 1909 as BH1379, this is the second oldest surviving A Type worldwide.
Built during the early years of Vauxhall's emergence as a major force in competitive motorsport in the UK, successive developments of the A-type resulted ultimately in the iconic 30-98: the 'Finest of Sporting Cars'. Whilst retaining many of the mechanical features of the earlier 12-16hp models, the A.09 was the first production car to feature Pomeroy's classic 4 cylinder 20hp engine which had performed so well in the 1908 RAC and Scottish Reliability Trials, winning Classes D & E for 20hp cars by a significant margin.
This car is substantially original mechanically, retaining the engine, 4 speed gearbox, front & rear axles and most of the other components exactly as it left the Luton works on 25th June 1909.
A09.73 survived the second World War, with the rear part of the body cut to make a commercial pick up, working on the family market garden. The original 'Roi de Belges' style 4 seater body was reinstated in the 1950s. Briefly sold in the 1960s, the original owner's son bought the car back and it has remained in the same family ever since. An album of period photos comes with the car (samples below).
The car is complete, but will require full recommissioning after a period of slumber in the family garage. It is the 12th oldest surviving Vauxhall, so this represents a rare opportunity to acquire an important part of Vauxhall's heritage as 'Britain's Oldest Car Maker'.
